Smart Audiences for DSP Strategies

Automatically deploy best-practice targeting logic without manual setup

Creating a high-performing Amazon DSP strategy often involves complex audience building—defining who to target, setting lookback windows, and carefully excluding past purchasers to avoid wasted spend.

With Smart Audiences, m19 handles this complexity for you. Instead of manually building audiences line-by-line, you can select from optimized presets designed for specific goals like Retargeting, Conquesting, or High Intent.

What are Smart Audiences?

Smart Audiences are pre-configured targeting structures based on Amazon advertising best practices. When you select a Smart Audience preset, m19 automatically creates the necessary "Include" and "Exclude" rules for you.

This ensures you are targeting the right users at the right time, while automatically filtering out people who have already bought from you or seen your ads too recently.

How to use Smart Audiences

  1. Navigate to the DSP section and create a new Strategy (or edit an existing one).

  2. Proceed to the Audiences step of the setup.

  3. You will see two options:

    • Standard: Manual control where you build audiences yourself.

    • Smart Audience: A list of optimized presets.

  4. Select Smart Audience and choose the preset that matches your goal.

Available Presets

Here are the Smart Audience presets currently available and the logic behind them:

1. Retargeting (The Closer)

  • Goal: Convert high-intent shoppers who viewed your product but didn't buy.

  • Best for: Driving immediate sales and improving ROAS.

  • How it works:

    • Targets: Users who viewed your product in the last 14 days (the "hot" window).

    • Excludes: Users who purchased your product in the last 30 days.

    • Why? This ensures you capture interested shoppers while they are still deciding, without wasting budget on recent customers.

2. Conquesting (The Competitor Raider)

  • Goal: Steal traffic from users browsing competitors' products.

  • Best for: Gaining market share in a competitive category.

  • How it works:

    • Targets: Users viewing similar products in the last 30 days.

    • Excludes: Users who have already viewed your product.

    • Why? This filters out people already familiar with your brand, ensuring your ad spend is focused purely on net-new customer acquisition.

3. High Intent (The Search Harvester)

  • Goal: Capture users searching for relevant keywords who haven't clicked on your product yet.

  • Best for: Catching "window shoppers" who missed your Sponsored Products ads.

  • How it works:

    • Targets: Users who searched for your keywords in the last 30 days.

    • Excludes: Users who have viewed your product.

    • Why?  Targeting searches indicates high intent. By excluding those who already viewed your item, you specifically target people who scrolled past your organic listing or Sponsored Ad, giving you a second chance to win the click via DSP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I add new ASINs to my strategy? Smart Audiences are dynamic. If you add or remove ASINs from your DSP strategy, the Smart Audience will automatically update to include these new products in the targeting rules.

Can I switch back to Manual mode? Yes. If you need granular control over lookback windows or specific audience segments, you can switch the toggle back to Standard.

Can I edit the rules of a Smart Audience? Smart Audiences are locked to ensure the logic remains optimized. If you need to create a custom structure (e.g., changing the lookback window from 30 days to 60 days), please use the Standard mode and build custom audiences.
